Overview

About Own Your SIP

Own Your SIP turns a Raspberry Pi into a SIP gateway for your mobile numbers. Put a SIM in a USB modem, or pair your existing phone over Bluetooth, and every SIP app you use, such as Zoiper, MicroSIP, a browser or another Asterisk or FreePBX system, can make and receive calls on that number. There is no cloud calling provider in the loop.

Everything is managed from a web interface: extensions, trunks, outbound routes by dial pattern with failover, inbound routing to ring groups, call logs, SMS on USB modems and remote access. A built-in browser softphone lets you call from any browser over HTTPS, and you never edit an Asterisk config file by hand.

Remote access works without port forwarding. A Cloudflare Tunnel carries the web interface and browser calls from anywhere, with optional Cloudflare TURN for difficult networks, and Tailscale connects SIP apps on your laptop or phone as if they were on your home network.

USB modem trunks use chan_dongle for Huawei E1550, E173, E1750 and E153 sticks with voice firmware, and chan_quectel for Quectel EC25 and EC20 and SimCom SIM7600 modules. Bluetooth trunks use chan_mobile, with the Pi acting as a headset for your phone, one call at a time. A one-command installer sets everything up on Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm 64-bit.

Features

What it does

An Asterisk gateway that turns USB GSM modems or a Bluetooth-paired phone into SIP trunks, with a web interface, browser softphone and remote access.
  • USB modem trunks

Huawei voice dongles, Quectel EC25 and EC20, and SimCom SIM7600 modules become SIP trunks.

  • Bluetooth phone trunks

Pair your Android phone or iPhone and use its cellular connection for calls.

  • Web interface

Extensions, trunks, routes, call logs and settings, without editing config files.

  • Browser softphone

Call from any browser over HTTPS with WebRTC, on your LAN or through the tunnel.

  • Routing and failover

Outbound routes by dial pattern with trunk failover, and inbound routes to ring groups.

  • Remote access without port forwarding

Cloudflare Tunnel for the web interface and browser calls, Tailscale for SIP apps.

  • SMS

Send and receive text messages on USB modem trunks from the web interface.

  • Works with any SIP app

Zoiper, MicroSIP, X-Lite and other softphones register as extensions, and other PBXs connect as a trunk.

  • One-command installer

Sets up Asterisk, modem drivers, certificates and services on a fresh Pi in 10 to 20 minutes.

FAQ

Questions and answers

Can't find what you're looking for? See the store FAQ or write to humans@thinktools.dev.

What hardware do I need?
A Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 running Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm 64-bit Lite (a Pi Zero 2 W handles one or two trunks), a powered USB hub, and either a USB modem with voice support or a phone to pair over Bluetooth. Many inexpensive 4G dongles have no voice support, so check before you buy.
Which modems work?
Huawei E1550, E173, E1750, E153 and E156 with voice firmware, Quectel EC25 and EC20, and SimCom SIM7600. USB modems are the most reliable option; Bluetooth phones work with some limits.
What are the Bluetooth limits?
Audio is mono 8 kHz, which is fine for voice, and each phone carries one call at a time. The phone must stay within a few meters and must not be connected to another headset or car kit. Some recent Samsung phones and iPhones are picky about pairing, and a USB Bluetooth dongle usually helps.
What do I receive?
Complete source code, the installer and build scripts for the modem drivers, the Asterisk configuration, the web interface and browser softphone, a setup guide, all updates and email support.
Can I use it away from home?
Yes. Browser calling works anywhere through a Cloudflare Tunnel, and SIP apps connect through Tailscale. Neither needs port forwarding on your router.
How do support and refunds work?
Email humans@thinktools.dev and a person will help with your setup. For refund terms, see Refunds.
